Interview of Ardena Matlack, April 8, 2021

Interviewed by Joan Wagnon

Ardena Matlack has contributed additional information to her transcript to clarify or correct her interview. She added a postscript to the transcript at the end of the interview.

Interview Description

Ardena Matlack describes the Kansas House of Representatives in the 1970’s when so few women were in the Kansas Legislature. Additionally, her second term she experienced being in the majority as a Democrat—something that seldom occurred. While in the majority, she started on the Federal and State Affairs committee as Vice-Chair, and moved up to chair the committee the second year of her term. The committee dealt with the ERA, abortion, liquor and a host of controversial issues. She also served on the Judiciary committee. Her discussion of gerrymandering shows the difficulty in dealing with reapportionment that led to her husband losing his Senate seat and encouraging her to run for the House. She also dealt with environmental issues and water issues, particularly in Sedgwick County. Matlack worked with Treasurer Joan Finney to get the first Unclaimed Property law passed.

Interviewee Biographical Sketch

Ardena Matlack served 10 years in the legislature from 1975-1984 representing House district 93, which was Clearwater and other rural parts of Sedgwick County, Kansas. She remembers her legislative service that began 47 years ago as a challenging, fun time. Now, at age ninety years she reflects on the fun she and her husband, former Senator Don Matlack, had as a political team. They attended the 1968, 1976 and 1984 Democratic National Conventions, trading places as delegate and alternates. They also attended two Presidential Inaugurations with their grandchildren. Matlack received the “Outstanding Woman of the Year” Award given by the National Federation of Democratic Women. She still belongs to the County, State, and National Democratic Women’s Organization. After leaving the legislature Matlack was appointed by Governor Carlin to the Kansas Arts Commission, serving from 1985-1989. Her other government service includes a term on the Kansas Library Board from 1993-1997. Matlack is a mother of five children, who was active in Methodist Women and the Business and Professional Women’s clubs. She has a B.M.E. degree from Wichita State University as well as joint interests with her husband in several businesses in Wichita.
