During Black History Month in 2025, the Kansas Oral History Project interviewed Michael Young, the artist who painted the Brown v. Board Mural gracing the third-floor hall outside the Old Supreme Court Room in the Kansas Statehouse. The interview was conducted by Linda Jeffrey in the Statehouse with the mural serving as the backdrop. Ms. Jeffrey is a native Topekan and long-time public servant.
Legislators from Leavenworth County (Mr. Young’s childhood home), Governor Laura Kelly, and Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson welcomed the audience. After the interview was completed, Mr. Young graciously responded to questions from the audience. This video captures the introduction to the oral history interview. The full interview including a downloadable transcript is available in the Notable Kansans collection on this site.
