Interview of Robin Jennison, October 4, 2019

Interviewed by Jim McLean
Interview Description

Jim McLean’s interview of Robin Jennison is lengthy but full of interesting stories and anecdotes about what went on in the legislature in the last decade of the 20th Century. McLean teases out both the politics and policy from Jennison’s experiences in the House with the 1992 school finance bill and his Republican alternative. Jennison shares his philosophy on how to fund schools, lower property taxes, leadership races and his rapid rise to Speaker in the 1999-2000 sessions. The strategy he used to pass the 1999 transportation bill out of the House is clever. There is an anecdote about replacing carpet in the Judicial Center and what it took to get that appropriation passed. Jennison describes his role as Secretary of Wildlife and Parks and working under Governor Brownback.

Interviewee Biographical Sketch

House Speaker Robin Jennison came from a political family. Both his grandfather, Herlan S. Jennison and his uncle, Robert H. Jennison served in the Kansas legislature representing Lane County. He served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 1991 through 2000 and also in several leadership positions: chair of the Appropriations Committee, majority leader and speaker in the 1999 and 2000 sessions. Jennison ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2006, but didn't get elected that year. He spent several years around the Capitol as a lobbyist for various organizations. In 2011, Governor Sam Brownback appointed Jennison to head the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. He stepped down from that position in 2018 to become the general manager of the Kansas State Fair, a position he held until 2020.
