Lt. Governor Dave Owen, Politician, Banker and Cowboy

Interview Description

Dave Owen's name is well known to most Kansans who follow politics. This interview is replete with stories about how Republican politics in the 60's, 70's, 80's worked. Stories include his friendships with Senator Bob Dole and Governor Bob Docking. One of his lasting accomplishments as Lt. Governor was the creation of the Kansas Cavalry for promoting business development. He left elective politics in 1972 but chaired Dole's Vice-Presidential run in 1976. His interests turned to banking and he became Chairman and CEO of the Bank of Stillwell. His affiliation with Ottawa University athletics and his love of basketball led to the creation of the Dave Owen Leadership Institute. He will be leading a delegation to Ukraine this fall, 2022 from the Lenexa Baptist Church and the Leadership Institute.

Interviewee Biographical Sketch

Dave Owen was born in Hermitage, Arkansas on a cotton farm. After WWII, his father got a government job and ended up in Galena, Kansas, working for the Alcohol Tax unit and supervised the making of whiskey at the Old Rock Distillery. Young Owen moved to Overland Park when he started fifth grade, and has lived in that area ever since. He graduated from Ottawa University where he has maintains a close relationship as an alumnus. Owen worked in financial institutions as a mortgage lender in the growing Johnson County area. In 1968 following a massive court order to redraw boundaries under the One Person One Vote principle, he ran for the State Senate, and later for Lt. Governor, running independently of the Governor. He became Chairman and CEO of the Bank of Stillwell. While he no longer sought elective office, he was instrumental in helping elect Bob Dole to the US Senate. Later, he ran Dole's Vice-Presidential campaign. He also found time after politics to qualify for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and calf-roped all over the country at major rodeos.
