Interview of Bill Bunten, February 18, 2015

Interview Description

Bill Bunten's 28 years in the House, 20 of them on the Ways and Means or Appropriations committee, gave him tremendous knowledge about the state budget. He chaired Appropriations from 1983 until 1990 when he left the legislature. He returned to the state Senate in 2003 to fill an unexpired term. Bunten later served two terms as Mayor of Topeka from 2005 until 2013.

Interviewee Biographical Sketch

Representative William W. (Bill) Bunten represented Topeka in the Kansas House from 1963-1990. After a brief hiatus, he went on to serve in the Kansas Senate (2003-2004) and then won two terms as the Mayor of Topeka (2005-2013). Bunten was Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee (renamed the House Appropriations Committee) 1983-1989. A native Topekan, Bunten was a basketball player while attending Topeka High School. He was a teammate and good friend of Dean Smith, who later went on to fame as a basketball coach at North Carolina. Bunten attended the University of Kansas and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. After college Bunten entered the US Marine Corps and served in Korea, rising to the rank of Captain. He and his brother operated an alfalfa dehydrating business in Topeka.
